Common Cause Leader Discusses Redistricting at next Current Issues Forum
Julia Vaughn, Policy Director for Common Cause Indiana will discuss the Independent Redistricting Bill proposed by Common Cause, the League of Women Voters and other progressive organizations at the Indiana Legislature this year. The bill was denied a vote by Elections Committee Chair Milo Smith during a hearing in which 19 of 20 speakers testified in favor of it.
Vaughn will speak at Democrat headquarters, 1417 Chestnut, at 6:30 p.m. April 11. She will address the two year effort to establish an independent redistricting committee in our state, and highlight similar successful efforts elsewhere in the country. Vaughn will also discuss a recent decision by the Wisconsin Supreme Court to strike down a legislative redistricting proposal ruled as blatant political gerrymandering. This decision is being appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court, and a decision within the next six months is expected to have a major impact on redistricting efforts throughout the country.
Persons interested in supporting another Independent Redistricting Bill that will be introduced in the 2018 General Assembly are encouraged to attend. The forum is open to the public.
