Statement from Rose Johnson, Democratic candidate for Bartholomew County Clerk:

Rose_Graphic.pngStatement from Rose Johnson, Democratic candidate for Bartholomew County Clerk:

Today's ruling in United States District Court invalidating Indiana's marriage discrimination laws was welcome news to people across the state who have struggled to achieve equality.  I join the many of our friends and family in praising Chief Judge Young's decision.

In Marion County, Clerk Beth White lost no time in recognizing the court’s decision and began issuing licenses and performing ceremonies for same-sex couples who have waited so long. Other counties have been quickly following suit.

But in Bartholomew County, same sex couples seeking to get marriage licenses found themselves up against a Clerk’s office refusing to obey the law.

We are surrounded by counties who are issuing marriage licenses to same sex couples as the courts have ruled we should, and as the Indiana Attorney General has said we should.

As a Democratic candidate for County Clerk, and as a Bartholomew County resident and taxpayer, I join those who urge our County Clerk Tami Hines to follow the advice of the state Attorney General and immediately comply with the federal court’s directive.
